The “dark art” of SEO

The bad name of SEO

SEO has been given a bad name over the years, even branded a “dark art”, but the reality is there is a huge amount of work that does into a successful SEO campaign.

Con Artists

There are many SEO companies who charge their clients a regular monthly fee without any proof of what is being done. SEO is not an instant ‘quick fix’ so a regular monthly fee is usual for search engine optimisation work. However, it is important to get a plan from your marketing company and ask for a report at the end of every month explaining what has been done and what results have been delivered.

SEO is changing

There are some things that companies could do themselves to improve their SEO but Google changes their algorithms on a regular basis in order to improve the service that they offer to people using their search engine. Once upon a time you could list all the keywords you wanted to be found for on your homepage and Google would index site for those words. Now Google is much more intelligent and recognises that a list of services is not what users are after. It therefore looks at everything from sentence length to readability.

Content is King

You’ve probably heard this phrase before. So what does it mean? The best and easiest thing you can do to improve your ranking in the search engines is to improve the content on your website. Improve how?

Headings

Make sure you use headings to separate your text (just like we have with this blog). The headings must use the appropriate tags e.g. H1 / H2 / H3. If you’re not sure what this means then you might need a hand – just drop us a line and we can explain more.

Copy

Every page should have around 300 words and should be written in simple language that naturally includes the words you would want to be found for on Google.

Images and Videos

Include images and videos on your pages and make sure they have titles and alt tags that help Google to index them. Many people upload an image to their website and it might be called DSC7343001.jpg. Google has no idea what this is and if for any reason it doesn’t load up, the person visiting your site won’t know what the image should be either. Before you upload your image to the site make sure you save it with a name that describes what the image is. Once uploaded you can then add a description and alt title to further help describe the image.

What else can I do to help my SEO

We’ve barely touched the iceberg of how to improve your SEO. At Enrich Marketing we offer a free no obligation SEO health check for your website. If you are quite tech savvy we can also provide a full report of what we advise you do so that you can do it yourself. The price of this varies depending on your site size and current position in the search engines so please give us a call on 0161 3939443 if you’re interested in learning more about this.
